Unique Frame Mounted Carrier for Tandems

The Thule 558P Tandem Bicycle Pivoting Roof Mount Carrier is a unique rooftop solution for transporting tandem, recumbent and even standard bikes. Being significantly larger than standard bikes, tandems and recumbent are generally a challenge for rooftop transport. Their shear size can make it difficult to find a carrier large enough, while even if you can find a suitable carrier, installing and removing a bike from it is generally awkward, possibly leading to dropped bikes and scratches to bikes and vehicles. The Thule 558P Tandem Bicycle Pivoting Roof Mount Carrier gets around both these issues with its specially designed 75 inch aluminum wheel tray that's compatible with tandems and recumbent and can also be shortened for use with standard sized bikes, and its unique fork mount design.

Pivoting Fork Mount Design

Like virtually all fork mount roof racks, the Thule 558P Tandem Bicycle Pivoting Roof Mount Carrier connects to the two dropouts of a bike's front fork via a skewer and clamp system. This skewer is connected to the carrier, which is in turn connected to the roof rack. The innovation in this system is in its pivoting fork mount design. The skewer and clamp assembly at the front of the unit is embedded within a pivoting pillar held inline with the wheel tray by a removable tail pin. Once this pin is removed the pillar head and skewer can turn 90°. Using this pivot system a single rider can easily load a tandem or recumbent on their own. To do this, pull the pivot pin and turn the pillar until it faces you. Install the handle bar strap as instructed to limit their movement separate from the bike frame and remove and stow the front wheel (for recumbent also remove seats). Next, lift the front end of the tandem to a vertical position, roll bike to the car and seat the front fork dropouts into the skewer fork mount. Firmly close the skewer lever, then grasp and lift the rear of the bike frame, placing it into the wheel tray. Finally, secure the rear wheel to the wheel tray using the wheel strap and reinsert the pivot pin to hold the entire unit inline. To remove a bike remove the pivot pin, unwrap the wheel strap, lift the rear of the bike from the wheel tray, pull it to the side and lower it to the ground. Now, release the skewer lever, lower the bike to the ground, install the front wheel and remove the handlebar strap. Realign the pillar head and reinsert the pillar pin and you are done.

About Thule

Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. The Thule Group is a world leader in providing transport solutions for an active life.

4.0 out of 5 stars High quality & versatile carrier, December 30, 2011

This review is from: Thule 558P Tandem Bicycle Pivoting Roof Mount Carrier (Sports)
I just got one of these for Christmas and mounted it on my Yakima rack system over the bed of my 2004 Tundra. Unlike other less expensive models, the Thule is made of high quality, corrosion-free, lightweight aluminum. I love the removable rear section. I can easily and quickly remove it to shorten the carrier to carry my regular bikes, without the extra length sticking out in the back. However, the pivoting fork mount, the one feature that led me to buy it, does not work in my installation because it requires that the carrier be mounted outboard of my load bar mounting feet to have enough clearance between the bike and the car when loading alone. Doing that will interfere with the quick, snap-on-snap-off, load bar removal feature of my Yakima rack system which I love so much. This forced me to choose which feature to keep so I went with the Yakima's. I wish that Thule designed the pivoting fork mount to actually swing out (like the Yakima competing model) to get more clearance... Read more

This item was easy to install and is well made. More importantly, it is very easy to use. I have a small 2-door VW Golf hatchback but wanted a way to move a tandem to the trails. The Thule carrier has two very clever aspects to it. The first is that the rear section comes off for mounting a normal bicycle. This is important for small car owners, since a long carrier prevents the hatchback from being able to open all of the way. The second is the rotating head to mount the fork. It is a snap to connect the fork and then swing the bike around. I am over 50 and this causes no strain at all. There is one minor comment, however, that I should mention. In order to be able to lift the bike up to mount the fork into the pivoting head, the carrier has to be fairly close to the edge of the car. Do to my roof mounts, i wasn't able to mount it as close to the edge as I would have liked, but found that by rolling down the front window there is no issue with the bike touching the car... C-Clamp Design Stability for Rooftop Mounts

The Criterium Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier is specially designed to deliver a precise hold on your bike, and in doing so providing a more stable ride for your vehicle during transport. The Criterium comes nearly entirely assembled, fits all Thule rack systems, as well as other round bars, is compatible with the Thule Aero profile with an additional adapter (sold separately) and most bikes with disc brakes. The key factors in the stability that the Criterium provides is the combination of its sturdy wheel tray which holds your bike wheels, the two cinchable wheel straps that quickly secure the wheels to the tray and the advanced central "frame-hold" support element which contains patented C-Clamp technology at its tip.

The C-Clamp utilized by the Criterium Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier sits at the end of a heavy-duty adjustable arm support that is raised from an inline position along the edge of the wheel tray and secured with a hex wrench at the angle that you choose best positions the C-Clamp to access the bike frame. The C-Clamp immobilizes your bike using an integrated dial that gently grips and holds the bike frame to achieve superior stability. To tighten the hold of the clamp simply rotate the integrated knob at the base of the arm support. To release the clamp's hold altogether press the release jaw button. Once the support element for the C-Clamp is set in a semi-permanent orientation for a specific bike or frame size, attaching or removing a bike can easily be done very quickly. The Criterium Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier comes assembled for use on the passenger side, but can be reconfigured for use on the drivers side. It is also compatible with the One-Key lock cylinder system (sold separately), which locks the bike to carrier and carrier to rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice rack., April 24, 2008

This review is from: Thule 598 Criterium Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier (Sports)
I wanted a rack that could directly mount to my Toyota Sienna (2003) and my RAV4 (2006) factory racks- the large clamps on this unit allows for this and provide a solid, stable mount without additional hardware. I also wanted something that didn't require the removal of the front wheel, and this also fit the bill. I was a little skeptical at first because the main mount seems a bit flimsy, but when you lock it down, it works and my bikes remain motionless, even with my bikes which are all 61cm road bikes. The Thule locks are easy to install and provide a small level of protection for when you really need to leave your bike- as with any of the bike rack locks, I wouldn't leave an expensive bike unattended for too long because the locks probably wouldn't slow down a bike thief too much.

I'd definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a rack, especially for those with factory racks with crossbars that this unit will fit. It will save you about $300 in additional... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 months later and still going., September 7, 2007

These bike racks are great. They're easy to install and use. We've used them on a rather regular basis.

My only caveat - don't buy them here! I had to return the 3 I bought from Amazon b/c they arrived in ripped up boxes (they're big boxes!). I called Thule for replacement parts, but Thule said no b/c Amazon was not an authorized dealer.

I found them elsewhere for about the same price and they shipped w/o any problems.

You'll like these racks. Simple but effective.

4.0 out of 5 stars part missing, May 7, 2009
This review is from: Thule 598 Criterium Upright Rooftop Bicycle Carrier (Sports)
Great racks, easy to put on and take off. Great way to put up bikes without having to remove the front wheel. 4 stars only because 1) rough directions re: flipping the rack to a driver side mounting configuration, 2) was missing one little barrel nut with one of the racks when it arrived - Amazon couldn't help except telling me I could return the whole rack for a new one. Thule was great and helped me once I could contact them, but the process meant my wife and I were cramming one bike in the car while we waited for the spare part in the mail.
